When my daughter was hospitalized in February, God performed an absolute miracle in saving her life. The doctor’s did nothing but give her an IV and ran tests.
 
She became sick on a Sunday afternoon, not wanting to eat. We figured that she had ear infection(s) so we scheduled an appointment for her to see Dr. Nau, her pediatrician.
 
Monday, Moira took her to see Dr. Nau and yes she had ear infections and gastritis. Not uncommon, just another sick child we thought. At 02:30 on Tuesday morning, Moira woke me up. I was sleeping on the couch so Tessa could sleep with Moira and be comforted. As I came into the room, I could see that Tessa had thrown up some nasty looking stuff, it looked like chocolate syrup (we later found out it was blood). As she looked at me, the Holy Spirit spoke to me, and told me to get going to the hospital now, if we don’t get there soon, she may die. I had never seen that look before in someone, but I firmly believe that God got us moving.
 
We loaded up everyone in the van, on one of the coldest nights of the year (the night that the fire in downtown Boone occurred). We drove from Perry to Ames, with Moira sitting in back next to Tessa for the ride. We got to the hospital, Moira took Tessa in, while I stayed in the van with the boys.
 
After Tessa was released from the hospital, Moira told me that in the emergency room, as the nurses and doctors were looking Tessa over and trying to figure out what was wrong, she could feel the presence of the Holy Spirit like she had never felt before and that Tessa was completely calm. Moira told the staff what Dr. Nau had told her the day before, so they knew that Tessa had ear infections and gastritis. This is where the first miracle occurred. For some reason, the emergency room doctor ordered a liver test. According to Dr. Nau, this was not a common standard operating procedure when a person has gastritis, but it is important for people to understand the whole story. We also found out that Tessa had mycoplasma pneumonia
 
They ran all sorts of tests on Tuesday morning, one was the liver test. Tuesday night, Moira called me at home to tell me that we have some bad news from Dr. Nau. This is when we found out that Tessa’s enzyme levels in her liver were at 9, 000, normal levels for a 13 month old were ~80-90. The situation was critical enough that Dr. Nau had already consulted a liver specialist at Mercy. Dr. Nau also told Moira, that if there was not a significant decrease in the enzyme levels by Wednesday, we would have to transfer Tessa to Mercy or Mayo in Rochester and prepare for a liver transplant, if one was available. It was critical enough at this point to prepare for this, as touchy as a transplant would be on a baby, not doing anything would lead to liver failure and death. I contacted our prayer chain leader and the prayer chain went out, people started praying, literally all over the world. Another thing happened - Pastor Ray came to the hospital and prayed with Moira for Tessa and the staff. It was also not a coincidence that Tessa’s room was across from the nurses station. She was in isolation, the doctor’s had no clue what was happening at this point.
 
Wednesday comes along. Day after first being admitted, day after the prayer chain went out, the day after Pastor Ray prayed at the hospital. This day was probably the hardest. I got on my knees before God, and finally told Him that I know Tessa was His before my daughter and that she still is. I also prayed that if this was going to be too much for her, that I was fine with God taking her back home to prevent her from suffering. But, I also admitted to God that I believe that He had bigger plans for her, and that my job was to help ensure that Tessa can grow up to fulfill that purpose. It wasn’t easy, but after my conversation, I had peace that I had not felt before. We got more results back - enzyme levels were cut in half. Praise God. Toxicology results were back, enzyme levels were not caused by medicine, specifically Tylenol. Bad news was, the doctors still have no clue why her enzyme levels were still over 4500. This was also the hardest day for Moira.
 
Another miracle happened on this day, the miracle was Moira was at the hospital and not me. One of our church elders came to the hospital this day to see Tessa and pray. It was hard on Bob, he talked to me about this a week or so later. The only way to keep testing Tessa was to draw blood. During her 4 day stay I think they ran over 100 tests to see what was happening with her. Again, let me remind you, Tessa was on an IV, had not eaten since Sunday and the doctor’s have done nothing to help her. 2 ear infections, gastritis, mycoplasma pneumonia and high liver enzymes, but no medicine, no treatments because of the enzyme levels. The nursing staff came in to draw more blood when Bob was there. They were running out of places to draw blood from her, they kept trying her arms, legs, etc., nothing. 4-5 people with the hospital lab staff were there. They asked Moira to leave, but Moira refused and told them that Tessa needed to hear her voice. That’s when it got worse. Bob started praying for Tessa and the lab staff. Moira told me later, that she got a slight glimpse of how Mary felt watching Jesus during his Crucifixion. 2 people held Tessa’s arms out, and Moira held her legs. One person held her head still, while a technician placed a rubber band across Tessa’s forehead and around her entire head, like a crown while they tried to poke her scalp to draw blood. You can imagine how Tessa was reacting. I know it affected Bob a lot too. It was bad enough that when Dr. Nau found out, he completely chewed out the lab staff and ordered them to never go near her again. He personally came on Thursday and Friday to draw blood from Tessa to run tests. Thank God for Dr. Nau, who is a Christian. He took time from his busy day to draw blood. That’s how bad it was, in the middle of flu season, a pediatrician came to the hospital to draw blood from my little girl.
 
But, praise God. Thursday we got more results back. Enzyme levels were cut nearly in half again, less than 3,000 now. Talk of transplant was forgotten at this point, but after all the tests run on Tuesday and Wednesday, no root cause to this problem. They ran every test you can think of, testing for almost every disease you can think of. The prayer chain updates were sent out immediately each day, prayers were still going out. This day Pastor Jeff came to pray for Tessa and the staff. Again, when Pastor Ray prayed, when Bob prayed, when Pastor Jeff prayed, the room was open, people were in the room. People saw and heard the prayers. People at the nurse’s station were witnessing the prayers and what was happening to Tessa. Each day after prayers, her enzyme levels were cut in half, and again, the doctors were doing nothing. They could not do anything, they did not know what was causing it. But again, Thursday, Pastor Jeff prayed, our prayer team prayed.
 
Friday comes around. Tessa’s enzyme tests come back, levels were still a little high, but in a safer range. Tessa, for the first time since Sunday afternoon had solid food and something to drink. Tuesday to Friday she had only an IV, no food, drink or medicine and no treatment for her ear infections, gastritis, mycoplasma pneumonia and her liver enzyme levels. But Dr. Nau believe that she was ready to come home. We were ready too. More tests were run that day, and in the next 2 weeks more tests were run. Dr. Nau told us this – “I don’t know what caused the enzyme levels in her to rise that high, but I know what healed her, God.” Also, by Friday she had no ear infections or gastritis, the mycoplasma pneumonia was still in the healing process.
 
I believe this with all my heart and soul that God healed her. God had that doctor run the liver tests in the emergency room.
 
God took a negative, listened to prayer and performed a miracle for us to see. For Bethel to see, for Mary Greeley to see. To this day, all of the nurses working in the children’s section of Mary Greeley remember Tessa and that situation. We found that out when she was hospitalized in July.
 
God wants people to hear this story. It’s all about Him. God gets the praise and the glory. He healed her, and in the process how many nurses, doctors, lab tech’s and other people at the hospital witnessed the power of God? Also, like I said above, God knew that Moira could handle the situation better than me. She was there that Wednesday when Bob was there because God knew that I could not handle it. I admit it, I am a Christian, but I am human. I probably would not have handled that situation right and probably would have lost my temper and did or said something wrong. It would have also destroyed all the work that God was doing with the people at that hospital. God is so amazing and awesome. He healed my daughter through His healing hands, while doctors could do nothing.
 
This is the testimony that people need to hear. There are many miracles happening at Bethel and to people there. It’s time everyone heard them, believed them and know that God is getting ready to do more. If God can turn a negative situation with a 13 month old baby into an awesome healing session that has reached many people, God can heal you and anyone.
